Cleaning in Schools

The health and safety of our children is of utmost concern to parents, teachers and administrators.  Why is it we so often neglect the role of the facility maintenance and janitorial staff?

Any person cleaning your school should pass a rigorous background check including nationwide criminal background and social security verification

All janitorial staff should complete a thorough training program including Bloodborne Pathogens, OSHA "Right-to-Know" laws, MSDS, Chemical use and Safety and Sexual Harassment.

Many states are requiring "Green Cleaning" in school facilities.  If your state does not require it, it is still a good idea.  "Green Cleaning" reduces harmful airborne contaminants, minimizes the use of chemicals and protects the environment.

Student attendance is important for learning and for school funding.  Custodians have a direct impact on the transmission of illnesses in a school environment.  Effective written Cleaning Specifications, Proper Training, Supervision, Inspections and follow through help to ensure the health of students.  The most important aspect of cleaning is proper disinfection of "high-touch" areas including doors, desk tops, water fountains and rest room fixtures.

Don't assume that the job is getting done.  Implement a certifiable training program, or hire a qualified cleaning contractor.
